Dates & Locations: This is a time-based subject, taught on campus at Parkville.
Time Commitment: Contact Hours: Regular contact with supervisor over the period of enrolment
Total Time Commitment: Total of 30 hours per week.

Entry into 102KH Master of Arts in Social Theory (Advanced Seminars and Shorter Thesis.


Corequisites:

During their period of enrolment in this subject students will normally undertake two of the following four subjects:

SOTH40003 The Critical Imagination

SOTH40001 Theories of Modernity

SOTH40002 Imagined Societies

SOTH90004 Reading Texts in Social Theory

Recommended Background Knowledge: Students who enrol in this subject must have completed a 4 year honours degree or equivalent, with a thesis component

Subject Overview:

Candidates will undertake research on a topic approved by the course co-coordinator under supervision of an academic member of staff.
Objectives: Students who successfully complete this subject will:
  • develop a research proposal.
  • pursue a research topic with critical discussion of the relevant theoretical literature.
  • further develop critical and analytical abilities.
Assessment: A thesis of 20,000 - 22,000 words.
Prescribed Texts: Appropriate texts will be determined in consultation with thesis supervisor

Generic Skills:
  • develop skills in written and oral communication.
  • conduct independent research.
