Subject Overview:

Students completing this subject will have developed their knowledge of grammatical structures and vocabulary, improved their reading knowledge through translation of authentic Russian texts involving a reader-response approach, improved their aural comprehension through multimedia and audio-visual material and have deepened their knowledge of Russian society and culture. At the end of the semester students should be able to communicate effectively and accurately in both spoken and written Russian.
Objectives:
  • Be able to communicate effectively and accurately in both spoken and written Russian on topics of some depth.
  • Be able to demonstrate a good knowledge of the basic grammatical system, and an active or passive knowledge of the relevant vocabulary from the textbook and other teaching materials.
  • Be able to translate from Russian into English fairly complex texts without a dictionary and texts of medium difficulty with a dictionary.
  • Have a deepened knowledge of Russian society and culture.
Assessment:

Regular assignments 50% (throughout the semester) and a written exam 50% (at the end of the semester).

This subject has the following hurdle requirements:

  • Regular participation in tutorials is required with a minimum of 75% attendance.
  • All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.
Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day and in-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked.
