Time Commitment: Contact Hours: 4 hours of language classes per week
Total Time Commitment: 4 contact hours/week , 4.5 additional hours/week. Total of 8.5 hours per week.
Prerequisites: JAPN10006/JAPN20004/JAPN30006 Japanese 4B or equivalent.

Subject Overview:

This subject aims to familiarise students with colloquial and dialectal expressions used in Japan. It introduces students to various styles of Japanese spoken by those differentiated by gender and region. It will also give students opportunities to examine different registers in various conversation settings. In class, students will view DVDs and analyse various types of conversations. Students will practice speaking in appropriate styles depending on the situation. Students who complete this subject should have acquired good knowledge of the diverse range of Japanese language practice.
Objectives:
  • be able to understand various styles of Japanese.
  • be able to use a variety of styles, appropriate on the situation.
  • be able to read articles on various styles of Japanese in Japanese.
Assessment:

In-class presentations 15% (due throughout the semester), an oral test 15 % (due at the end of semester), a 2000 word final examination 50% (due during the examination period) and a project involving online writing tasks 20% (due throughout the semester).

Class attendance is required for this subject; if you do not attend a minimum of 80% of classes without an approved exemption you will not be eligible for a pass in this subject. Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day. In-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked. All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.
