Subject Overview: Supervisors will be social workers, certified genetic counsellors and/or associate genetic counsellors. During the placement, students will be expected to work with other members of the multi-disciplinary team, including dietitians, OTs and scientific laboratory staff. There will be regular supervision sessions during the placement. Students will complete set tasks and demonstrate an ability to:
  • relate appropriately to staff in the multi-disciplinary team;
  • observe and understand the process of interviewing by sitting in on interviews with supervisor and the writing of process reports; and
  • undertake tasks in a case/cases selected by supervisor and work in conjunction with supervisor.

Independent work with supervision will also be undertaken in selected cases, including:

  • participation in ward rounds;
  • coordinator tasks
  • collation of information
  • making appointments
  • familiarisation with community resources generally and in relation to particular cases; and
  • participation in appropriate support groups - eg. Bereavement Support Group, Support After Foetal Diagnosis of Abnormality (SAFDA).

Objectives: Students will complete set tasks and demonstrate an ability to:
  • relate appropriately to staff in the multi-disciplinary team;
  • observe and understand the process of interviewing by sitting in on interviews with supervisor and the writing of process reports; and
  • undertake tasks in a case/cases selected by supervisor and work in conjunction with supervisor.

Assessment: Supervisor and student will together complete an assessment of the students participation at the end of the placement. The assessment will address issues of theoretical knowledge, personal development, task achievement, understanding of and ability to work in the system and within a multi-disciplinary system. Assessment will be pass or fail.

  • Identify and analyse the theories of counselling that can be intergrated into clinical interview and practice;
  • Develop the effective use of counelling models and skills to establish a relationship with clients from diverse backgrounds;
  • Engage effectively in supervision to develop reflective practice and self awareness;
  • Explore and understand the role of the genetic counsellor within a multidisciplinary team;
  • Understand the link between genetic counselling practice and the community, developing appropriate referral patterns and resources; and
  • Enhanced skills through reading widely in journals and texts.
