| Subject Overview: | Topics covered include: The underpinnings of major psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, depressive disorders, bipolar affective disorders, dementias The DSM and ICD 10 criteria for psychiatric diagnosis that are important for reliability and validity of symptom complexes The phenomenology of psychotic symptoms, mood symptoms and cognitive symptoms that are measured in clinical trials in psychiatry Administering diagnostic instruments to support the diagnostic classification of the DSM and or ICD systems The validity and reliability of rating instruments used in psychiatric clinical trials including the use of anchor points in ratings to have acceptable inter rater reliability in multicentre international clinical trials Community and acute mental health professionals and case managers as integral component of successful outcomes for psychiatric clinical trials Safety considerations of subjects and others in psychiatric clinical trial |

| Objectives: | Students who successfully complete this subject will be able to: To develop and run Clinical Trials research in psychiatry To specify, run and manage clinical research in the areas of schizophrenia, bipolar adfective disorders, depressive disorder, dementias and cognitive dysfunction studies To run clinical trials in psychiatry that interface with neurology and geriatrics To use objective rating scales effectively to measure primary and other outcome objectives in psychiatric research To measure psychosocial and health economic effects of interventions in psychiatry clinical trials To use and administer care giver scales for subjects in psychiatric clinical trials research To effectively recruit and retain subjects taking part in psychiatric clinical trials research |
