Time Commitment: Contact Hours: Four hours of language classes per week

Prerequisites: CHIN20012 Chinese 5A or equivalent as determined by the coordinator.

Subject Overview:

This subject is a continuation of Chinese 5A. It involves advanced spoken and written Chinese. Students will read a variety of extracts from Modern Chinese and improve their writing and speaking skills.
Objectives:
  • read a variety of extracts from modern literature.
  • write Standard Chinese in a variety of styles.
  • acquire skills to communicate knowledge in a formal way, drawing on a broad understanding of literate culture.
  • acquire skills to invest time and effort systematically to bring literacy skills to higher levels of sophistication. and
  • be able to discuss contemporary issues and their historical and cultural backgrounds orally and in writing with increased levels of sophistication.
Assessment:

A 1-hour composition test 20% (mid-semester), a 10-minute oral examination 10% (during the examination period), a 2-hour examination 60% (during the examination period), ongoing class work 5% and ongoing class participation 5%.

Class attendance is required for this subject; if you do not attend a minimum of 80% of classes without an approved exemption you will not be eligible for a pass in this subject. Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day. In-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked. All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.
