Subject Overview:

This is a subject for students who have limited literacy in Chinese. Students will build on their previous study and be able to read relatively complex texts as well as increasing their knowledge of traditional Chinese culture. They should be able to conduct discussion on a wide range of topics.

Objectives:
  • read a variety of extracts from modern literature.
  • be familiar with traditional Chinese culture.
  • write Standard Chinese in a variety of styles.
  • acquire skills to write effectively on complex cultural issues, drawing on knowledge drawn from written sources.
  • have knowledge of a difficult system of written communication requiring intensive time discipline and regular application of effort. and
  • acquire skills to discuss contemporary issues and their historical and cultural backgrounds orally and in writing.
Assessment:

A 1-hour composition test 20% (mid-semester), a 10-minute oral examination 10% (during the examination period), a 2-hour examination 60% (during the examination period), ongoing class work 5% and ongoing class participation 5%.

Class attendance is required for this subject; if you do not attend a minimum of 80% of classes without an approved exemption you will not be eligible for a pass in this subject. Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day. In-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked. All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.
