Subject Overview:

A study of the theory and practice of policy development, implementation and evaluation in the area of arts and cultural policy drawing upon international applications and a range of different policy models. This topic will explore the breadth and diversity of policy that impacts upon the arts and cultural industries using a comparative approach to policy analysis.
Objectives:
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of different styles of arts policies as practised internationally;
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of the scope and application of cultural policy across communications and the arts;
  • be able to understand the processes by which policy is developed and implemented; and
  • be able to demonstrate an ability to apply a range of strategies for the purposes of evaluating the effectiveness of specific policies.
Assessment: An oral presentation and seminar paper equivalent to 1500 words 30% (late in semester) and a research assignment equivalent to 3500 words 70% (due at the end of semester). Students are required to attend a minimum of 80% of classes in order to qualify to have their written work assessed. All required written work must be submitted in order to pass the subject.
