Overview:

English is the study of imaginative writing and dramatic performance. It focuses on their forms and traditions, and on the myriad ways they engage with the everyday world. The program offers subjects in a wide range of fields, from the Medieval to Romanticism, Modernism, Postmodernism, and beyond. This includes English, Australian, American and postcolonial writing and theatre; European, Classical, and literary, cultural and performance theory. English at Melbourne University is recognised nationally and internationally for its innovative teaching, scholarship and research.

In first year, students will be introduced to the wider dimensions of studying English with more specialised subjects at second and third year. The program also offers honours and postgraduate studies including Masters and PhD.

Objectives: Students who complete the specialisation should have acquired the following skills and competencies:
  • an introductory knowledge of the main periods and trends in English and/English and Theatre studies;
  • an introductory knowledge of key critical methods in English and/English and Theatre studies;
  • general skills in the analysis of literary and/or dramatic texts, genres, histories, cultures and performances;
  • general skills in research, writing, and thinking critically about creative texts and performances.
Structure & Available Subjects:

Major

The BA major in English consists of eight 12.5-point subjects, totalling 100 points and comprising:


Level 1 (25 points)

  • one level 1 English subject (12.5 points)
  • one Arts lnterdisciplinary Foundation subject (12.5 points)

Level 2 (37.5 points)

  • 37.5 points of level 2 English subjects

Level 3 (37.5 points)

  • Students completing a major must undertake the compulsory capstone subject ENGL30002 Critical Debates
  • and 25 points of level 3 English subjects

Total 100 points

Minor

The BA minor in English consists of six 12.5-point subjects, totalling 75 points and comprising:

Level 1 (25 points)

  • one Level 1 English subject (12.5 points)
  • one Arts lnterdisciplinary Foundation subject (12.5 points)

Level 2

  • 25 points of level 2 English subjects
Level 3
  • 25 points of level 3 English subjects
Total 75 points

The capstone subject is not available to students completing the minor or as breadth.
