Time Commitment: Contact Hours: Three hours of language classes and a 1-hour language laboratory class per week
Total Time Commitment: 4 contact hours/week , 8 additional hours/week. Total of 8 hours per week.
Prerequisites: Chinese 2E or equivalent as determined by the coordinator. New students may not enrol unless they have attended an interview and/or placement test in the week preceding the first week of semester.

Subject Overview:

This course will further enhance students" knowledge of vocabulary, the basic grammar of spoken Chinese, and reading, writing and oral/aural skills.
Objectives:
  • have mastered the basic grammatical structures of Modern Chinese.
  • have a vocabulary of approximately 1000 characters.
  • have sufficient listening and spoken skills to cope with everyday situations in China.
  • acquire skills to use written materials to acquire systematic competence in a communicative code.
  • be able to time manage and regularly invest effort as the foundation for advanced levels of competence.
  • and develop cross-cultural communication skills.
Assessment: A 1-hour examination 30% (during the examination period), a 30-minute listening comprehension test 20% (during the examination period), a 10-minute oral test 20% (during the examination period), fortnightly tests 10%, a composition test 10% (at the end of semester) and class participation 10%.
