Prerequisites:

Completion of 25 points of Level 1 Sociology, 37.5 points of Level 2 Sociology (including 166-081, 672-379, 166-086 or 191-004), and Level 3 Sociology subject 166-300 Contemporary Sociological Theory. 166-300 and the Sociology Internship can be taken concurrently in 2010.

Subject Overview:	In this subject a student, under academic supervision from the sociology program, undertakes a sociological research project in an organisation outside the university, such as a trade union, social movement, women"s organisation, welfare service provider, government or non-government organisation or business organisation. The project will be determined jointly by the student and the organisation concerned.
Objectives:	be able to design, carry out and produce a report of a sociological research project in a public sector or non-governmental organisation, integrating a range of sociological methods. be able to demonstrate an ability to successfully negotiate and work with stake holders in the design, implementation and reporting of a sociological research project. be able to integrate issues of research ethics into an undergraduate research project.
Assessment:	A Research Report of 6,000 words (75%), and a Reflective Essay of 2,000 words (25%). Both pieces of assessment are due during the examination period.

Generic Skills:	Be able to research through the competent use of the library and other information sources, and be able to define areas of inquiry and methods of research in the preparation of research reports. Be able to conceptualise theoretical problems, form judgements and arguments and communicate critically, creatively and theoretically through report writing, workplace discussion and presentations. Be able to communicate knowledge intelligibly and economically through report writing and workplace discussion. Be able to manage and organise workloads for recommended reading and the completion of work assignments and assessment. Be able to participate in team work through involvement in internship placements.
Notes:	Entry to this subject is by application as a quota of 16 students applies. Application forms are available from the Arts and Music Student Centre and the School of Social and Political Sciences website during the course planning period. The Sociology Internship is not available as a Breadth subject and is only available to students who are completing a Sociology major.
