Subject Overview: Students enrolled in this subject will be assisted to find a placement in a professional working environment. They will work for approximately 100 hours under the guidance of a senior staff person, with additional support from the subject co-ordinator and regular workshop sessions. The placement will enable students to apply in a practical environment skills developed in their other coursework units. Students will thus gain direct exposure to professional practice in their chosen field.
Objectives:

Students completing this subject will:

  • have acquired an extensive knowledge of the conditions, cultures and practices of a range of workplaces;
  • have gained practical vocational experience in an industry setting;
  • have developed a capacity to critically evaluate their experience and to share their findings through written and oral reports; and
  • have an extended ability to apply professional concepts, frameworks and techniques in a practical setting.
Assessment: Description of company, CV, cover letter and career plan equivalent to 1500 words 30% (due early in the semester). journal and professional portfolio of 3500 words 70% (due end of semester).
Prescribed Texts: A subject reader will be available.

Students who successfully complete this subject will gain written and oral communication skills through:

  • contribution to workshop discussions and participation in workplace-based discussions and reporting sessions;

  • significant insight into the complexities of professional decision making and management;
  • time management and planning through managing workloads for recommended reading, and workshop presentations; and
  • a capacity for critical analysis through engagement with and critique of a range of professional strategies.
