Time Commitment:

Contact Hours: 4 hours of language classes per week

Subject Overview:	This subject aims to familiarise students with colloquial and dialectal expressions used in Japan. It introduces students to various styles of Japanese spoken by those differentiated by gender and region. It will also give students opportunities to examine different registers in various conversation settings. In class, students will view DVDs and analyse various types of conversations. Students will practice speaking in appropriate styles depending on the situation. Students who complete this subject should have acquired good knowledge of the diverse range of Japanese language practice.
Objectives:	be able to understand various styles of Japanese; be able to use a variety of styles, appropriate on the situation; be able to read articles on various styles of Japanese in Japanese.
Assessment:	In-class presentations 15% (due throughout the semester), an oral test 15 % (due at the end of semester), a 2000 word final examination 50% (due during the examination period) and a project involving an in-class presentation and writing tasks 20% (due throughout the semester).
