Prerequisites: Completion of three years of approved university language study at post-VCE level. Candidates with other qualifications will need to arrange to be assessed by a language department of an Australian university as being of equivalent proficiency.

Core Participation Requirements: Attendance at all classes (tutorial/seminars/practical classes/lectures/labs) is obligatory. Failure to attend 80% of classes will normally result in failure in the subject.

Subject Overview: This subject will build on teacher candidates’ knowledge of second language teaching and learning across the primary years.
Emphasis will be on principles and practices that support the development of languages other than English from an intercultural perspective as well as tasks and processes that will allow work in languages to be linked across the curriculum in interdisciplinary activities.
Teacher candidates will be introduced to curriculum design commonly used in primary LOTE programs and will be asked to consider the practical implications for planning teaching/learning strategies, identifying print and ICT resources as well as devising assessment and evaluation schemes.
Objectives: On completion of this subject, teacher candidates will be able to:
  • Gain sound theoretical knowledge of second language teaching & learning.
  • Create an environment which will develop in primary school learners an understanding of the nature of language and its fundamental role in human learning, expression and interaction.
  • Expand the repertoire of practical techniques for teaching their language and related social information.
  • Design, implement and evaluate LOTE curriculum, appropriate to different groups of learners, incorporating suitable content, classroom organisation, methodology, resources and assessment strategies.
  • Enhance the skills to work in a collaborative environment where reflection on the group's activities, processes and goals forms an integral part of the learning.
Assessment: One 2,000 word assessment activities task (50 per cent) , a LOTE learning/teaching report 2,000 words (50 per cent)
