Time Commitment: Contact Hours: A 1-hour weekly meeting with the supervisor
Total Time Commitment: An average of 10 hours each week
Prerequisites: Admission to the postgraduate diploma, fourth-year combined honours in development, or completion of or concurrent enrolment in 121-547 Minor Thesis, or by permission of the course coordinator.
Corequisites: Normally 121-547 Minor Thesis
Recommended Background Knowledge: Knowledge gained in successfully completing an undergraduate degree
Non Allowed Subjects: Formerly available as 121-106. Students who have completed 121-106 are not eligible to enrol in this subject.

Subject Overview:

This subject involves a critical assessment of the literature of a research area in development studies, chosen by the student in consultation with the supervisor. The area of review will be determined during regular meetings and discussions between the student and supervisor. Regular meetings will be held to discuss the development of academic arguments in the review. Preparation of the review will include an extensive literature search by the student on the defined topic and critical appraisal of drafts by the supervisor prior to final submission of the review.
Objectives:

Students who successfully complete this subject should

  • possess library research skills.
  • develop analytical skills.
  • acquire training for writing academic papers.
  • appreciate theoretical perspectives in development.
Assessment: A written review essay of 5000 words [100%] (due at the end of semester).

Texts will be determined in consultation with the supervisor.
