Time Commitment: Contact Hours: Four hours of language classes per week

Subject Overview:

This course builds on the knowledge acquired by students in Chinese 2D or Chinese 2F (previously offered as Chinese 1B) . Students should broaden their listening comprehension and speaking skills and gain confidence and independence in handling written Chinese language materials and in making the transition from textbook material to original Chinese texts.
Objectives:
  • be able to function in Chinese in a limited number of formal situations.
  • be able to make a short speech in Chinese on a limited number of subjects.
  • develop some basic correspondence skills.
  • have a vocabulary of approximately 1200 characters.
  • be able to use foundational knowledge of structural patterns to manage complex bodies of new information.
  • be able to recognise the indispensability of accuracy in communication while dealing with larger quantities of information.
  • acquire knowledge of key social and cultural phenomena as the basis for a heightened global awareness.
Assessment: Short tests and/or assignments 10% (commencing 2nd week and before the end of semester), an oral test 20% (during the examination period), a listening and comprehension test 20% (during the examination period), a final examination 40% (during the examination period) and continuous class participation 10%.
