Subject Overview: This subject exposes students to the foundations for achieving business success through information technology (IT). Topics include robust transaction processing and decision support, systems development and sourcing, data modelling, total cost of ownership, valuing IT assets and projects, modelling, information economics and foundations of business intelligence. The course introduces students to the practical skills and conceptual knowledge necessary for understanding the business application of IT for competitive advantage.
Objectives: On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
  • Critically discuss the different types of business information systems, their interrelationships, and their impacts on management and strategy;
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic technology concepts that enable business information systems: networks, client-server principles, transaction-processing systems and business data management;
  • Interpret and analyse planning documents for business data modelling;
  • Discuss the interrelationships between technical and managerial issues in the development of information systems and information architectures;
  • Critically discuss and evaluate the different business-value impacts of information systems;
  • Assess the implications for markets of advances in information technologies;
  • Describe several technologies for improving decision-making.
Assessment:
  • 2-hour end-of-semester examination (60%)
  • One group project (20%)
  • Assignments totalling not more than 1,000 words (10%)
  • Seminar participation (10%).
