Subject Overview:

This subject explores the interlocking themes of identity and ideology in a variety of Asian contexts. It examines how the ways in which people define themselves - "identities"- are affected by socially-structured systems of thought - "ideologies". National ideologies and identities from across the Asian region will be explored in conjunction with study ethnic, religious, class, gender, and regional forms of identity and ideology.

Objectives:
  • To understand problems of ideology and identity in a range of Asian societies
  • To understand key theoretical concepts in the humanities and social sciences -namely those of ideology and identity - and to use those concepts in the analysis of social and cultural phenomena
  • To understand the impact of national and other ideologies and identities on the world in which we live
Assessment: Research essay, 2,000 words, 30% (due mid-semester), research essay 3,000 words (due during the exam period) 55% and regular seminar participation, including presentation of original research 15%
