Subject Overview: This course builds on the skills developed in semester one and will focus around dramatic narrative styles, storytelling and metaphor, both formally and informally, improvised and prepared. Students will explore styles and forms from Indigenous and Non-indigenous perspectives through a range of stimuli including literature, art, music and performance. In the exploration of these ideas they will experiment with different theatrical ways to represent ideas such as: Forum theatre. This will lead to an advanced level of communication skills in improvisation, confident spontaneity in front of a group, developing assertiveness when negotiating ideas and different perspectives, responsibility to the ensemble, and organizational skills building to a performance.
Objectives: On completion of this subject students will have developed their confidence in the following key areas:
  • the effective use of dramatic storytelling techniques;
  • sustaining commitment to the formation and expression of their work;
  • creating new realities and experiencing different perspectives – to step outside their own experiences and imagine others;
  • exploring higher order communication skills appropriate to different contexts – formal, informal, academic and creative;
  • raising questions, exploring options and challenging stereotypes;
  • higher order organizational skills and multi-tasking.
Assessment: Solo monologue presentation during semester (20%). Three key written tasks submitted from writing portfolio during semester (30%) 2000 words. A major group devised storytelling performance piece - creation and performance. The presentation will be based on exploration and development of ideas based on a theme and other creative stimuli (50%) .
