Geography

Geography is about the relationship between people and their environments. Geography integrates both physical science and social science knowledge to provide students with the skills and conceptual frameworks needed to understand the processes that shape the world around us. As Geography is a field-based discipline, the major enables students to gain practical and relevant research experience. While practical laboratory classes, field trips, and group project work are found at all levels of study in the major, the third year exemplifies the scope and strength of Geography. In this year, students complete a 'capstone' subject pertaining to the history and philosophy of Geography, and may also take 25-point subject involving significant, original, field-based research under the guidance of teaching staff. The major will provide opportunities for students to develop critical intellectual skills, transferable professional skills, a sense of public responsibility and engagement, and higher research degree capacities. Completion of the major will allow students to enter careers or research in the following areas: environmental sciences, resource management, environmental consultancies, industry and government.

In 2010 a number of new third year level subjects have been introduced, replacing or adding to subjects previously available within the major. Some previously offered subjects have been cancelled. The University is committed to ensuring that students are not disadvantaged by these changes and students may complete a major as defined by the current structure or a structure detailed in a previous year's handbook applicable to any year the student was enrolled in the course. Students completing third year level subjects across multiple years (e.g. in 2009 and 2010) should refer to advice within each subject entry on non-allowed subject combinations. Students unsure about the structure of their intended major should seek advice from the Science Student Centre.
