Subject Overview: In this subject the Greek conventions for various types of formal discourse are analysed and practised, including formal correspondence, formal reporting, technical description and public announcements. In the process, advanced Greek grammar is studied and practised, and the higher registers of Greek vocabulary introduced. Linguistic skills will also be extended through projects developed and reported on in class, and involving interaction with the local Greek community.
Objectives:
  • be able to use formal Modern Greek with a high degree of grammatical correctness and observing the Greek conventions for various forms of form discourse.
Assessment: Regular assignments and class exercises (1500 words) 30%; one 750-word project (due week 10) 15%; one end of semester 2-hour written test 40%; one end of semester 15-minute oral-aural test 15%. Third-year students will be expected to show a greater achievement of discipline-specific skills in their written work than second-year students.
