Time Commitment: Contact Hours: Four hours of language classes per week
Total Time Commitment: 4 contact hours/week , 8 additional hours/week. Total of 12 hours per week.
Prerequisites: Chinese 5A or equivalent as determined by the coordinator. New students may not enrol unless they have attended an interview and/or placement test in the week preceding the first week of semester.

Subject Overview: This subject is a continuation of Chinese 5A. It involves advanced spoken and written Chinese. Students will read a variety of extracts from Modern Chinese and improve their writing and speaking skills.
Objectives:
  • read a variety of extracts from modern literature;
  • write Standard Chinese in a variety of styles;
  • acquire skills to communicate knowledge in a formal way, drawing on a broad understanding of literate culture;
  • acquire skills to invest time and effort systematically to bring literacy skills to higher levels of sophistication; and
  • be able to discuss contemporary issues and their historical and cultural backgrounds orally and in writing with increased levels of sophistication.
Assessment: A 1-hour composition test 20% (mid-semester), a 10-minute oral examination 10% (during the examination period), a 2-hour examination 60% (during the examination period), ongoing class work 5% and ongoing class participation 5%.

Notes: This subject is for the background speakers stream of Chinese (limited literacy). This subject was previously offered as 110-042 Standard Chinese 3B. Students who have completed Standard Chinese 3B are not eligible to enrol in this subject.
