Time Commitment: Contact Hours: Regular meetings with supervisor
Total Time Commitment: 1.25 contact hours/week, 8.75 additional hours/week. Total of 10 hours per week.
Prerequisites: Admission to the postgraduate diploma or fourth year honours in gender studies.

Subject Overview: The subject involves a study of theoretical, empirical or methodological issues broadly related to the thesis topic and conducted through extensive reading, decided by the student in conjunction with the supervisor.
Objectives:
  • enhance the student’s powers of independent inquiry,
  • encourage initiative in self-directed research
  • strengthen the student’s capacities in theoretical analysis and argument.
Assessment: A 5000 word essay 100% (due at the end of semester).

Generic Skills: Students who successfully complete this subject should
  • demonstrate research skills through competent use of the library and other information sources;

  • be able to think in theoretical terms, through analysis of a range of conceptual and methodological approaches
  • demonstrate time management and planning through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion
