Time Commitment: Contact Hours: Regular meetings with the supervisor

Subject Overview: This is a reading subject for students who have completed Arabic 4B or equivalent. Readings will be selected in consultation with the student in the first week of the semester and should be completed in line with the guidelines provided to the student. Focus will be on one area of Arabic studies: linguistics. Students enrolling in this subject should be able to undertake a small-scale research project in Arabic linguistics and present the findings in a scholarly manner.
Objectives:
  • be able to undertake a small-scale research project in Arabic linguistics;
  • be able to present the findings in a scholarly manner;
  • acquire the skills to conduct analytical research on complex structures drawing both on detailed knowledge of content and on intellectual tools;
  • be able to communicate scholarly findings acquired through analytical research; and
  • be able to systematically evaluate complex cultural structures in an academic framework.
Assessment: An essay of 5000 words 100% (due at the end of semester).

Notes: This subject is available at level three for the post-VCE stream of Arabic. It is only available at level four for students admitted to the BA (Honours) in Arabic.
