Time Commitment: Contact Hours: A 1-hour lecture and three hours of language classes per week
Total Time Commitment: 4 contact hours/week , 4.5 additional hours/week. Total of 8.5 hours per week.
Prerequisites: Japanese 1B or equivalent. New students with prior language experience may not enrol unless they have taken a placement test in the week preceding the first week of semester.

Subject Overview: This subject consolidates students' Japanese knowledge and enables communication on various everyday topics in Japanese. Various reading and listening materials are introduced to enhance students' communication skills on a range of topics. Students will learn a further 75 kanji (Chinese characters). Students are also introduced to various aspects of Japanese culture. Computer laboratory instruction will support the curriculum.
Objectives:
  • comprehend a variety of Japanese including honorific and casual speech;
  • master basic Japanese grammar;
  • be able to communicate a wide range of topics confidently;
  • be able to read longer and more complicated sentences than Japanese 1B;
  • learn new 75 Kanji (Chinese characters);
  • acquire skills to enhance communicative capacities by synthesizing pre-existing knowledge with more complex forms of expression;
  • acquire skills to use time management and self-motivation to persist with demanding learning tasks;
  • acquire skills to interact cross-culturally using knowledge of different behavioral norms.
Assessment: Five in-class quizzes of 200 words 15% (throughout the semester), a speaking test 15% (due at the end of the semester), a composition task 10% (due mid semester), a 30-minute listening test 10 % (due at the end of semester), a final examination (due during the examination period) 45% an class participation 5%. Students are required to attend minimum of 70% of seminars and lectures.

  • develop research skills through computer use of the library, electronic database and other information sources and the definition of areas of inquiry and methods of research.
Notes: This subject is available at level one for the Post-VCE stream of Japanese. It is only available at level two for students who completed subject requirements for the beginners stream of Japanese at level one.
