Subject Overview: In this subject, students focus on a range of technical examination and documentation methods, including visual examination using normal and ultraviolet light, photography, infrared reflectography, stereomicroscopy and x-radiography. Sampling methods, spot tests and microscopic identification of materials are also studied. The second half of the subject introduces students to some of the more common instrumental techniques for analysing materials.
Objectives:
Assessment: Photography, 20% (through semester), a 1000 word technical report, 20% (due mid semester)and a 3000 word essay, 60% (due end of semester)
Prescribed Texts: A subject reader will be available from the Bookroom at the beginning of semester

Generic Skills:
  • Students should gain an understanding of the processes involved in a range of methods used to examine cultural material. They should develop the basic skills required for conservation documentation.
