TBA| Subject Overview: | This subject explores a range of popular guitar styles that have had widespread impact over the past century, including blues, rock and global folk styles. As well as examining relevant literature and recordings, students will be instructed in the performance of basic examples of these styles. On completion of this subject students should be able to recognise and critically discuss different styles of guitar music. Students should learn basic playing, maintenance and tuning techniques on the guitar in relation to the styles studied. |

| Assessment: | Class participation and a five-minute practical guitar test to be held during the examination period (30%); a listening test to be held in the last week of the semester (30%); two 500-word assignments due in weeks 5 and 10 of the semester (40%) |
| Prescribed Texts: | A reading pack will be available for purchase from the Melbourne University Bookshop before the start of semester. Students will be required to provide their own 6-string acoustic guitar (either steel or nylon strings will be accepted). |
