Subject Overview:

Objectives:

A candidate who has successfully completed the subject should:

  • Be familiar with the central decision-making structures of the EU, NAFTA and MERCOSUR
  • Know how the legal systems of the different Member States have adapted to these organisations
  • Be aware of how these legal systems have mediated the tension between trade liberalisation and protection of other public goods, such as protection of the environment and public health
  • The relationship between these and the global trading environment.

Syllabus:

Principal topics will include:

  • Institutional procedures of the EU, NAFTA and the MERCOSUR
  • Dispute settlement and the relationship between local law and regional law
  • Free movement of goods and quantitative restrictions in the regional blocs
  • Comparative analysis of labour rights in the different blocs
  • The different blocs and the WTO.
Assessment:
  • Take-home examination (100%)(3-6 October)
