Dr A S AbdullahSubject Overview: | This subject will develop students' skills such as the capacity to use some basic idiomatic and conversational forms and ability to use them freely in speech; proficiency in written structures of moderate complexity and the capacity to use such structures clearly and accurately; interpreting messages of a medium level of complexity occurring in a variety of audio-visual media and individual and group spoken forms. Students should become conversant in some aspects of advanced Arabic syntax and morphology, the historical development of Arabic language and literature up to the modern period including some examples of literary writing in the modern period, and translation of texts of moderate difficulty from Arabic to English and English to Arabic. |

Assessment: | Homework 10% (ongoing), oral assessment 10% (ongoing), a 10-minute aural/oral test 10% (mid-semester), a final oral examination 20% (at the end of semester) and a final 2-hour written examination 50% (during the examination period). |

Breadth Options: | This subject is a level 2 or level 3 subject and is not available to new generation degree students as a breadth option in 2008. This subject or an equivalent will be available as breadth in the future. Breadth subjects are currently being developed and these existing subject details can be used as guide to the type of options that might be available. 2009 subjects to be offered as breadth will be finalised before re-enrolment for 2009 starts in early October. |
