Time Commitment: Contact Hours: 90 hours clinical practice in a specialised clinic or area of paediatric physiotherapy.
Total Time Commitment: Students will be expected to undertake a number of hours of self directed learning in this subject. Approximately 50 hours of self directed learning is suggested.

Subject Overview:

This subject is designed to deepen existing knowledge and skills in an area of paediatrics, including current methods of management, advanced concepts in interpretation, advanced levels of patient management skills, ethical issues, problem solving, clinical reasoning and decision making skills.

Assessment: Clinical competencies (60%), case presentation (40%). Students must gain a pass in both the clinical and theoretical components in order to pass the subject.

On completion of the subject, students will be expected to be able to demonstrate:

  • The knowledge and skills in research design, research methodology and critical analysis of relevant clinical literature necessary to appreciate the role of research as a basis for evidence based practice
  • Critical evaluation of assessment and treatment approaches
  • Education of patients, caregivers and health professionals
  • Consultancy and advocacy
  • Goal setting, self-evaluation and reflective practice

Specific Skills:

On completion of the subject, students will be expected to be able to demonstrate:

  • Patient assessment and treatment planning including integration and interpretation of patient problems and effective goal setting
  • Advanced understanding of the scope of practice of paediatric physiotherapy
  • Advanced knowledge of physical, biological, medical and behavioural sciences
  • Advanced clinical knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for competent assessment, prophylaxis, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with paediatric movement and related disorders
  • Physiotherapeutic intervention that is based on sound base of evidence and sensitive to service delivery models and the culture of both the patient and the organisation
