Subject Overview: Students should understand the different theories and symptomology of autism; communication skills; communication intervention, interaction styles; understanding social skills and social competence needs; working with social scripts; developing appropriate social skills intervention; informal and formal assessment of social and communication skills; addressing social relationships; intervention in interactive perspective taking deficits.
Assessment: Assignments equivalent to 4,000 words (100 per cent)

Generic Skills: On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
  • understand the condition of ASD and its effect on social skills and communication;
  • develop skills in a range of social skills intervention and communication;
  • evaluate the effectiveness of a range of interventions and assessment procedures;
  • be able to adapt and differentiate social and learning environments;
  • be able to work with parents and program team.

Generic Skills

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • evaluate and apply new knowledge;
  • apply analytical and critical thinking skills in relation to communication and social skills needs;
  • improve capacity and skills to review research;
  • debate practices and approaches in communication and social skills intervention;
  • demonstrate leadership and teamwork when working with support teams in the design of communication and social skills programs;
  • clearly communicate children's progress to families and professionals.
