Course Overview:

The Masters course in Creative Writing offered jointly by the School of Creative Arts and the Department of English, aims to provide advanced professional and intellectual education for already practising creative writers and four-year graduates of creative writing and professional writing courses. The course provides experienced and qualified writers with further training, education, collegiality and stimulation without requiring a purely academic or research project. This qualification may lead to higher degree study.

Objectives:

Students who complete the masters should have:

  • developed the ability to initiate a significant creative project and carry it through to completion;
  • developed capacities for critical evaluation and creative self-awareness;
  • developed flexible and sophisticated strategies for problem-solving in creative projects;
  • developed a respect for communication, support, cooperation, constructive criticism and intellectual integrity within the discipline of writing and the community of writers;
  • have developed an understanding of the highest professional and intellectual standards in the discipline.
Course Structure & Available Subjects:
  • a thesis subject (50 points)*
  • three coursework subjects (37.5 points)
  • one advanced workshop (12.5 points)

A total of 100 points - subjects are 12.5 points each, unless indicated otherwise.

*Students enrolled prior to 2005 will complete a minor thesis of 37.5 points the remaining 12.5 points will be undertaken as coursework with consultation with the coordinator.

Entry Requirements:

The minimum entry requirement is:

  • a four-year honours degree, or equivalent, majoring in Creative Writing, Professional Writing, Literary Studies or a related field with an average of 70% (H2B) in the major
or
  • an undergraduate degree and writing and publishing experience equivalent to fourth year honours.
Applicants will be selected on the basis of academic records, a folio submission of 5000 words and interviews where necessary.
