Course Overview: The postgraduate certificate provides an entry point to an articulated structure of higher degree study and may qualify graduates for entry to the postgraduate diploma.

Objectives: Students who complete the postgraduate certificate should:
  • understand the major social theories relevant to contemporary critical enquiry;
  • demonstrate critical engagement with significant debates in the discipline;
  • develop skills of critical analysis in relation to specific areas of social theory.
Course Structure & Available Subjects:
  • at least one core subject in Social Theory
  • up to three elective subjects
Total 50 points - subjects are 12.5 points each, unless indicated otherwise.

Students wishing to take an elective subject other than those listed above must consult the Social Theory 4th year coordinator.
Entry Requirements: 1. The Selection Committee will evaluate the applicant's ability to pursue successfully the course using the following criteria -

• an undergraduate degree with at least 50 credit points at second or third year level in a cognate discipline with a grade average of at least H2B (70%) in these subjects , or equivalent; or
• a Graduate Diploma in a relevant area of study with a grade average of at least H2B, or equivalent.

2. The Selection Committee may conduct interviews or tests and may call for referee reports and employer references to elucidate any of the matters referred to above.
