Subject Overview:

At the end of the sequence Veterinary Pharmacology & Toxicology A and Veterinary Pharmacology & Toxicology B students completing these subjects should understand: the language of pharmacology and toxicology; the concept of drug receptors and molecular responses; the principles of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics; the mechanisms of action of classes of drugs affecting different organ systems, in particular drugs affecting the autonomic, cardiovascular, renal, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and central nervous systems, as well as anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and endocrine drugs, anti neoplastic antimicrobial agents, anti parasitic agents; and the toxicology of plant, animal, agricultural, industrial and household chemicals.

Topics include: Drugs affecting the central nervous system; anti-inflammatory drugs; systems pharmacology; toxicology, anti parasitic and antimicrobial agents.

Assessment: A 2-hour end of semester written examination including questions drawn from both theory and practical components (80%), a toxicology group assignment based on field work, and comprising an oral presentation and a short written report of not more than 30 power point slides (15%), and five online formative assessment exercises conducted during the semester (1% for each test completed during semester).
