Subject Overview: The objective of the subject is to engage students in research and enable the acquisition of research skills; increase students' knowledge and understanding of the relevant discipline and awareness of current developments and issues relating to the discipline; develop independent and critical thinking; improve oral and written communication skills.
Assessment: Assessment requirements are defined at the start of each study and included in the research contract. Outputs to be assessed will be broadly equivalent to a 10,000-word written assignment and may comprise a single output or combinations of outputs including written papers; seminar presentation; experiments; laboratory analyses; statistical analysis of existing datasets, etc.

Generic Skills:

The specific objectives of the study are determined individually for each candidate, in relation to their expressed research interests. The scope and content of the research project is discussed between the candidate, nominated study supervisor and Subject Coordinator, and confirmed in writing as a research contract. The candidate is required to define a researchable question and prepare a research protocol, which outlines a program of study to address the question proposed. The protocol should include a title, brief background to the researchable question; statement of objectives, proposed method of exploration such as a literature review, experiment or survey, and a proposed schedule of activities. Required outputs from the study must be specified in the research contract, together with submission deadlines for each output.
