Course Overview:

The postgraduate diploma allows students to undertake a research project in a specialist field of study. Students will gain considerable knowledge in an area of Arabic studies and engage in critical assessment of the major theoretical claims of the discipline. The course provides a pathway to higher degree research for students who have not completed a four year BA (Honours) with a research component in Arabic studies.

Objectives:

Students completing the Postgraduate Diploma should understand:

  • the development of modern Arabic literature in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries;
  • key issues in modern Arabic literary criticism;
  • the impact of the West on developments in literature, literary criticism and thought;
  • methodologies of research in Arabic studies;
  • how to design and write a preparatory research dissertation on an Arabic studies topic.
Course Structure & Available Subjects: • Thesis 12,000 words (37.5 points)
• One compulsory subject (12.5 points)
• Two language subjects (25 points)
• Two electives subjects (25 points)

Total 100 points - subjects are 12.5 points each, unless indicated otherwise.

Entry Requirements: 1. The Selection Committee will evaluate the applicant’s ability to pursue successfully the course using the following criterion –

• an undergraduate degree with a major in Arabic (100 credit points) or a cognate discipline with a grade average of at least H2B 70% in the major, or equivalent;

2. The Selection Committee may conduct interviews or tests and may call for referee reports and employer references to elucidate any of the matters referred to above.
