Course Overview:

The postgraduate diploma allows students to undertake a research project in a specialist field of study. Students will gain considerable knowledge in an area of philosophy and engage in critical assessment of the major theoretical claims of the discipline. The course provides a pathway to higher degree research for students who have not completed a four year BA (Honours) with a research component in philosophy.

Objectives:

Students who complete the postgraduate diploma should:

  • acquire knowledge of the background necessary to proceed to research work in philosophy;
  • develop skills necessary to proceed to original work in the subject;;
  • acquire the formal qualifications necessary to proceed to Masters level work in philosophy.

  • Thesis of 10,000 words

History and philosophy of science*

* A maximum of two history and philosophy of science subjects may be taken as electives, subject to approval of the philosophy course coordinator. Other subjects may be considered in consultation with the course coordinator.
Entry Requirements:

The minimum entry requirement is:

  • an undergraduate degree with a major in philosophy or cognate discipline and a grade average equivalent to an H2A (75%) at the University of Melbourne in the major
or
  • a Graduate Diploma in Arts (Philosophy) with a grade average equivalent to an H2A (75%) at the University of Melbourne.
