Postgraduate Diploma in Arts (Japanese)

The postgraduate diploma allows students to undertake a research project in a specialist field of study. Students will gain considerable knowledge in an area of Japanese studies and engage in advanced level language study while undertaking critical assessment of related issues. The course provides a pathway to higher degree research for students who have not completed a four year BA (Honours) with a research component in Japanese.

Students who complete the postgraduate diploma should:

• discuss a wide range of current issues in Japanese;
• appreciate language styles and major points of selected readings in Japanese;
• demonstrate an understanding of Japan and contemporary Japanese society;
• write a thesis of 12,000 words, comparable with that appropriate to an Honours degree.

1. The Selection Committee will evaluate the applicant’s ability to pursue successfully the course using the following criterion –

• an undergraduate degree with a major in Japanese (100 credit points or 125 credit points for the beginners stream) or a cognate discipline with a grade average of at least H2B 70% in the major, or equivalent;

2. The Selection Committee may conduct interviews or tests and may call for referee reports and employer references to elucidate any of the matters referred to above.
