Course Overview:

The postgraduate diploma allows students to undertake a research project in a specialist field of study. Students will gain considerable knowledge in an area of Chinese studies and engage in advanced level language study while undertaking critical assessment of related issues. The course provides a pathway to higher degree research for students who have not completed a four year BA (Honours) with a research component in Chinese.

Objectives:

Students who complete the postgraduate diploma should:

  • read a wide range of materials in Chinese;
  • apply their understanding of these materials to the study of China;
  • demonstrate a familiarity with research methods commonly employed in Sinology and Chinese studies.
Course Structure & Available Subjects:
  • Thesis 12,000 words (37.5 points)
  • four compulsory subjects (50 points)
  • one elective subject (12.5 points)
Total 100 points - subjects are 12.5 points each, unless indicated otherwise.

Entry Requirements: 1. The Selection Committee will evaluate the applicant’s ability to pursue successfully the course using the following criterion –

• an undergraduate degree with a major in Chinese (100 credit points or 125 credit points for the beginners stream) or a cognate discipline with a grade average of at least H2B 70% in the major, or equivalent;

2. The Selection Committee may conduct interviews or tests and may call for referee reports and employer references to elucidate any of the matters referred to above.
