Course Overview:

The graduate diploma is similar to an undergraduate major and offers a comprehensive program of study in geography. The course is suitable for general interest or professional development purposes and does not require a research project or thesis. Graduates are provided with a pathway to higher degree study and may qualify for entry to the postgraduate diploma. The course is designed for graduates who did not major in geography in their degree but now wish to do so, and for professional people who may wish to upgrade their qualifications in the area of geography. The course aims to provide foundational instruction in the areas of physical and human geography.

Objectives:

Students completing the graduate diploma should:

  • understand the contemporary issues in geography and appreciate the spatial and temporal differences in environmental and social systems;
  • understand and develop the skills and techniques used to measure the components and processes of environmental and socio-spatial systems;
  • acquire research skills necessary to pursue a higher degree.
Course Structure & Available Subjects:
  • two compulsory subjects (25 points)
  • a fieldwork component subject (25 points)
  • elective subjects to make up 100 points
Total 100 points - subjects are 12.5 points each, unless indicated otherwise.

Note: All students are advised to make an appointment with the course coordinator to discuss their subject selection prior to enrolment at the Faculty of Arts Office.
