Course Overview:

The graduate diploma is similar to an undergraduate major and offers a comprehensive program in French studies. The course is suitable for general interest or professional development purposes and does not involve a research project or thesis. Graduates are provided with a pathway to higher degree study and may qualify for entry, if they receive approval from the Head of Section, to the Postgraduate Diploma in Arts.

Objectives:

Students who complete the graduate diploma should:

  • attain a high level of linguistic competence;
  • acquire the ability to communicate in French on a wide range of subjects;
  • develop an understanding and appreciation of various aspects of French literature and culture.
Course Structure & Available Subjects:
  • a combination of compulsory and elective subjects
Students may choose from three options available in the Graduate Diploma (see below). Those who have completed previous study of the language will normally commence at a higher level, subject to approval by the course coordinator. Option One

For candidates with no or very little previous knowledge of French.

  • Compulsory subjects A & B
  • 2 elective subjects
Total 100 points - subjects are 12.5 points each, unless indicated otherwise. Option Two For candidates with four or five years of high school French (or equivalent)
  • Compulsory subjects A & B
  • 4 elective subjects
Total 100 points - subjects are 12.5 points each, unless indicated otherwise. Option Three Candidates with a minimum of VCE French (or equivalent) must undertake the following subjects. The course must include one language sequence relevant to the candidate's initial level of linguistic competence (to be tested by course coordinator prior to enrolment).
  • a combination of one sequence (A, B or C) of compulsory and elective subjects
Total 100 points - subjects are 12.5 points each, unless indicated otherwise.

Students undertaking Option Three B or C, who wish to enrol in the Postgraduate Diploma should seek advice from the course coordinator or a Faculty course adviser regarding an appropriate enrolment.

Entry Requirements:

The minimum entry requirement is:

  • an undergraduate degree in any discipline.
