Course Overview:

The graduate diploma is similar to an undergraduate major and offers a comprehensive program of study in environmental studies. The course is suitable for general interest or professional development purposes and does not require a research project or thesis. Graduates are provided with a pathway to higher degree study and may qualify for entry to the postgraduate diploma. The course is designed for graduates who did not major in environmental subjects in their degree but who now wish to do so, and for professional people who may wish to upgrade their qualifications in the environmental area. The course aims to provide basic instruction in areas of environmental studies that lead to an understanding of the environment, sustainability and the social forces that affect the environment.

Objectives:

Students who complete the graduate diploma should have an understanding of:

  • the ecological and physical principles of a range of environmental systems;
  • basic theory and methods appropriate to understanding how these systems can change;
  • the environmental and social forces that can affect change in natural and built environments;
  • different perceptions of the environment and nature;
  • environmental valuation and rational approaches to evaluating conflicting valuations;
  • the economic potential of the environment and how the environment affects, and is affected by, development;
  • field, laboratory and other ways of measuring environmental capacity and change.
Course Structure & Available Subjects:
  • one compulsory subject
  • a minimum of three core subjects
  • two elective subjects
Total 100 points - subjects are 12.5 points each, unless indicated otherwise.

Note: All students are advised to make an appointment with the course coordinator to discuss their subject selection prior to enrolment at the Faculty Office.

Note: A fourth year level subject available at the University of Melbourne but not listed above may be approved as an elective, if prerequisites are satisfied, with the approval of the course coordinator.

  • an undergraduate degree in any discipline.
