Subject Overview:

This subject will prepare students for undertaking clinical research within hospital, community and primary health care settings. Students will develop skills in how to design and conduct empirical research in an ethically appropriate manner. Content includes: development of a research question, study design and methodology, and ethical issues in health care research. This subject will be conducted as a mix of weekly seminars and one intensive workshop.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Critically analyse literature
  • Critically analyse practice
  • Develop capacity to undertake independent research
  • Appreciate the ethical issues involved in undertaking research with human participants and be familiar with the formal process of ethical review of research
Assessment:
  • Research proposal which includes a 2500 word literature review on a set topic (maximum of 5000 words total), due end of semester – 80%
  • Class participation, throughout the semester – 10%
  • Class presentation (10 minutes) on student’s research project topic and marked by members of MGC faculty, held in last week of semester – 10%
