Subject Overview:

This subject focusses entirely on a study of the musical product of this country, its musical languages, identity, influences and composers. Seminars will involve listening and analysing Australian music. It will also place Australian music in historical social and cultural context.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this subject students should have the ability to

  • discuss Australian music with musicians and the broader community (in Australia and overseas) with knowledge and authority;
  • promote the Australian art music product by placing it in an international context;
  • foster confidently the performance of contemporary Australian music;
  • promote greater understanding and knowledge of the large cohort of Australian women composers.
Assessment:

Preparation and commitment as demonstrated by performance tasks and/or a regularly updated journal of activities embracing all areas studied (50%) - Hurdle requirement of 80% attendance. A written research paper of approximately 1500 words or equivalent project as negotiated between the lecturer and student (50%).
