Time Commitment: Contact Hours: 34 hours- 2 x 1 hour lecture and 1 x 1 hour tutorial per week. There will be no tutorials in the first and last weeks of semester.

Subject Overview:

This subject is a detailed examination of the major elements of English grammar using principles of linguistic analysis. Students learn to identify and describe the main morphological and syntactic constructions in English including parts of speech, basic sentence structure, tense, aspect, clause type, negation, complex sentences, thematic systems, ellipsis, coordination, and the relations between sentences in discourse.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this subject, students should:

  • have attained in-depth knowledge of the major elements of English grammar;
  • be able to apply skills in linguistic analysis utilizing a variety of text types, and developed awareness of intellectual integrity;
  • have made wide use of learning and research technologies (LMS, Library);
  • further honed writing abilities across a variety of text types;
  • participated in individual and group-based problem-solving activities.
  • Tutorial exercises (8) throughout semester [10%]
  • Problem sets (2) mid-semester and end of semester [50%]
  • Final exam (40%)

Hurdle requirement: Students must attend a minimum of 75% of tutorials in order to pass this subject. All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.

Note: Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per working day. In-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked.
