Prerequisites:

JAPN10004 Japanese 6. Otherwise, all students enrolling in Japanese at The University of Melbourne for the first time are required to use the online placement test: https://edtech.le.unimelb.edu.au/login/lptjapanese/ .This applies to all students, including total beginners and those who have experience with the language, whether through formal study, such as VCE or equivalent, or informally through family or overseas travel. The results of the test are binding and enrolment can only be changed in consultation with the relevant course coordinator.

Subject Overview:

This subject is designed for students who have completed Japanese 6 and can recognise around 600 kanji characters, or those who have similar experience. This subject will enhance students’ academic literacy skills to conduct research related to Japan/Japanese. Students will establish advanced Japanese literacy and background knowledge in order to engage in international issues surrounding Japan. Students will develop understanding of various genres through reading, and discussing issues in modern Japanese society. Students will be engaged in a small scale research project on chosen topics by further investigating the issue and by writing an opinion piece and presenting it to the class. Through the research project they will develop their research skills and will equip themselves with critical literacy by analysing issues in question from various perspectives and participating in small group discussions.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this subject, students should:

acquire in-depth knowledge of different aspects of the target language and language education;
develop sensitivity to implied meanings from given texts, and be able to relate them with a certain choice of words, sentence structure and cohesive discourse;
communicate and exchange their views in Japanese with other students of linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds;
conduct group research activities using emerging technologies;
engage in meaningful discourse with students in Japan;
write an opinion piece based on findings from group project work.

Assessment:
  • Written work in Japanese, 600 words due throughout semester (15%)
  • Two oral assessments, 800 words due mid-semester and end of semester (20%)
  • A cultural discovery project, 600 words due towards the end of semester (15%)
  • A 2 hour written examination due during examination period (50%)

Hurdle requirement: Class attendance is required for this subject; if you do not attend a minimum of 80% of classes without an approved exemption you will not be eligible for a pass in this subject.

Note: Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day. In-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked. All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.
