Subject Overview:

This subject is the culmination and synthesis of all the other subjects on the course, where knowledge and skills are applied in a project that the student will identify independently. This will take the form of fieldwork; this may be on a project happening at the VCA or in the main stage or independent theatre arena in Melbourne, nationally or internationally. This would entail working as a dramaturg or assistant dramaturg on a project of a large or small scale. This work will be documented, discussed and critically analysed for assessment purposes.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Advanced dramaturgical awareness, providing the knowledge to understand work within its socio-cultural environment;
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a creative process as a dramaturg;
  • Ability to conduct research for a project and supply this research to a director/creative team in a useful way;

  • The knowledge, practice and critical approaches required to build the Australian performance culture of the future;
  • Reflective practitioners with embedded research skills and knowledge;
  • Advanced critical, artistic and conceptual skills

  • Oral presentation on project (20 minutes) - mid-semester (20%)
  • Engagement with practical project (evidenced by journal and formal documentation of research materials; observation of rehearsals/meetings, where appropriate). (Equivalent to 4000 words) - end of semester/assessment period (40%)
