Subject Overview:

This subject undertakes an in-depth study of the interplay between politics, policy and the creative economy under globalization. We examine how economic, social, cultural, technological and political developments in the post-Keynesian era have influenced the increasing internationalization of the arts and creative industries and the policies that shape them. Particular attention will be paid to the relationship between the state, the private sector and civil society through an analysis of the ways in which globalization shapes cultural policy and practices at local, regional, national and international scales.

Learning Outcomes:

Students who complete this subject will:


• be able to demonstrate an understanding of cultural policies in an internationally comparative framework;
• be able to demonstrate an understanding of the scope and application of cultural policy frameworks and rationales across the arts and cultural industries;
• be able to understand the processes by which policy is developed and implemented; and
• be able to demonstrate an ability to apply a range of strategies for the purposes of evaluating the impact and effectiveness of specific policies across a range of sectors in the global creative economy

Assessment:

Discussion facilitation, 15% (due during the semester), a sectoral synopsis, 2000 words, 30% (due during the semester), and a research assignment equivalent to 3000 words, 55% (due in the examination period).

Students are required to attend a minimum of 80% of classes in order to pass this subject.
