Overview:

Music Performance is a flexible program tailored to meet your musical interests, skills and career pathways. The specialisation centres on the study of a chosen instrument to develop the professional level skills expected of a performing artist. Students undertake a performance-based first year to hone music performance and applied music skills alongside historical, contextual, theoretical and aural learning. From second year your focus can remain heavily performance-based, shift to Musicology or Ethnomusicology, or you can apply for the Composition specialisation.

Structure & Available Subjects:

All students in the Bachelor of Music Performance/ Composition/ Musicology/ Ethnomusicology Specialisation undertake 8 core subjects alongside their chosen specialised and general elective subjects.

  • 225 points of music subjects are undertaken (including the 8 core subjects as listed below)
  • 50 points of breadth subjects are undertaken including at least 12.5 points at Level 2 or 3 (and no more than 37.5 points at Level 1)
  • 25 points of free subjects (either music or breadth) are undertaken at Levels 1 to 3
  • No more than 125 points may be taken at Level 1.
  • It is recommended that free subjects are undertaken in the third year.
  • First year students are permitted to enrol in Level 2 & Level 3 12.5 credit point subjects, provided they meet the subjects' requisite requirements where applicable.

An audition is required for:

  • Big Band
  • Early Voices
  • Piano Duo and Duet
  • Symphony Orchestra
  • Vocal Ensemble
  • Wind Symphony

Special permission is required for:

  • Chamber Music
  • Minor Music Performance

During the re-enrolment period, ensemble selections, except Chamber Music, will be processed with provisional approval. Enrolments will then be reviewed by Ensemble Directors, in the context of audition outcomes, before ensemble enrolment can be confirmed. Auditions will be held during February/March. The Melbourne Conservatorium of Music reserves the right to alter ensemble enrolments according to audition/special permission outcomes.
