Subject Overview:

This subject examines the major animal production systems in Australia, with a particular focus on the impact of management practices on the health and welfare of animal populations. Students will develop and appreciation of the economic drivers of these industries, measures of productivity utilised within these industries, and the role of the veterinary profession in ensuring the health and wellbeing of animals.

Learning Outcomes:

This subject aims to equip students with a sound understanding of animal management practices in the major animal industries in which veterinarians are employed, and an understanding of the impact management practices on the health and wellbeing of animals.

Assessment:
  • One 2-hour written examination at the end of semester (60%)
  • Three intra-semester tests of less than one hour's duration (8.33% each; total = 25%)
  • Satisfactory completion of two weeks of industry based placement in a rural enterprise, or two weeks of placement in an animal shelter of zoo (hurdle requirement). Approved placements may be local, regional, interstate or international. Written report for each week of industry placement that demonstrates capacity to integrate concepts introduced in different units within the course and apply an understanding of determinants of health to the context of a specific industry (15%)
